The idea in one sentence: an assistant that runs on your computer, that you message on WhatsApp, Telegram or iMessage like any contact, and that actually does things instead of just answering.

Where it came from

The history is remarkably short. In November 2025, Vienna-based developer Peter Steinberger (founder of PSPDFKit) built a simple WhatsApp relay for AI replies. By January 2026 it had become a proactive personal assistant, went viral as Clawdbot and then Moltbot, and on 30 January was renamed OpenClaw.

In February, Steinberger joined OpenAI to work on agents for a mainstream audience. His phrase for the mission: an agent “even my mum can use”. OpenClaw itself deliberately did not go with him. Installing OpenClaw: what you really need

Installation is a one-line terminal installer (it provisions what it needs) or a native companion app for macOS and Windows. That gets you running on a laptop; for a true always-on assistant you want a small server (an old Mac mini, a home server, or a ~$5/month VPS), because a closed laptop runs no night jobs.

Plan for three things:

A place for it to live (see above).
A model. An API key from a major provider to start; a local model if data control is the point.
An hour of permission hygiene. Which folders may it see? Which accounts may it use? OpenClaw ships sandboxing options; use them before, not after.

Point three is the one people skip. A self-extending, autonomously acting agent is exactly as trustworthy as the permissions you grant it. That is manageable, but it is a decision, not a default.

Who OpenClaw is right for

Choose OpenClaw if you want three things: full control over your data (it runs on your hardware, the cleanest answer to GDPR and confidentiality questions), an assistant inside the messengers you already use, and the largest ecosystem of ready-made extensions. Development is fast: the 2026.8.1 beta from August 2026 adds stricter rules for stored credentials, verified database snapshot backups, and model and runtime switching without a restart.
